Stay Tuned For Next Week’s Blog

April 4, 2007

Now that I’m back in the dating scene, I am working on a really nice, long blog on the subject of MEN and DATING for next week.  Not that I claim to be an expert in the field of casual dating, but apparently, I’m pretty good at it.  It’ll be a funny and fun piece, giving advice to you men out there on what a girl likes/wants from a man with whom she’s been on dates.  So, stay tuned for next week’s blog.

Thanks, and by the way, I’ll say this to anyone’s who’s just wondering…. I work on the longer blogs at home – and not at work. I wouldn’t want anyone to think that I’m blogging while I should be working. 😉

    So where’s the big story?

    GirlyGirl34:

I hear you’re back on the dating scene? I, as Honorary President of the Single People’s Club of America, welcome you back with open arms! And nooooooooooo…the club is just a figment of my imagination! 🙂

Anyway, here’s an article I wrote for my law school paper a few years back as a wee 2L on what I affectionately coined, “Chivalry in the 21st Century.” Now, stop working and read on…

    —–

It seems that in this day and age, chivalry is a long-lost trait – something you see in syrupy chick flicks but rarely in the real world. Since we’re in law school and in the prime of our lives, I’ll relate chivalry to the dating scene – something, with which we are all familiar. Of course, since I am a guy, you’ll be getting this from a guy’s perspective.

Chivalry can turn even the most routine or mundane date into a truly special encounter. First off, guys, always make sure that you drive that special lady in your life to wherever you both plan on going for the evening. Experience tells me that girls tend to be pleased when the guy handles the transportation logistics, at least on that nerve-wracking first date. Next, go to a place that is romantic but also both trendy and fun, so that it won’t seem overly “datey” to either person. Nothing ruins a date quicker than the awkwardness derived from an environment that screams, “We’re on a date!” I suggest not directly asking the girl where she wants to go, but rather pick a place you think she’d enjoy, and then surprise her with it. In my opinion, you can’t go wrong taking her to a leisurely dinner at a place like the Cheesecake Factory or Front Page and then for a nice walk around the shops, galleries, and waterfront in Old Town, Alexandria, before stopping for late-nite coffee (or in my case, some sort of black tea) at Bread & Chocolate or Cosi.

And, guys, make sure you always, always, always hold the door open for your date, and be sure to pick up the check without hesitation. Girls, as I am sure you know, we’re not made of money, so if you order something for “market price,” be prepared to break out the Palmolive and wash dishes before leaving. Also, I always think highly of a date that makes a genuine offer to pick up the tab. Doing so, in my opinion, shows warmth and sincerity. Then, if you’re hyperactive like me, you may want to get drinks at your favorite sports bar or grab a movie from Blockbuster. I am not a big fan of watching a movie at the theatre while on a date. The whole point of a date is to have fun and get to know the person better, not silently sit in the dark. If both of you are sports fans, going to an O’s or Wizard’s game are additional possibilities.

Above all else, I have found that girls prefer a sensitive, compassionate gent who doesn’t monopolize the conversation with boastful stories but rather shows modesty and an interest in learning about her. You should always make the girl feel like she’s the only one you would ever consider going out on a date with, and to do this you must demonstrate that she has your full attention, at least for as long as the date lasts. That means no ringing cell phones during dinner! And above all else, guys, never ever, ever, ever get your date’s name confused with someone else – especially a previous date! Girls absolutely hate when that happens. So, loyal readers, with all of that said, the time has come to follow my simple rules of chivalry, and hopefully your date will turn into a smash-hit and lead to future chart-toppers!
