Weekend Music Picks

July 15, 2011

The weather man is promising that the gorgeous weather will hold, so how fortuitous that there are two great outdoor music festivals on Saturday.

The first is the free Global Fusion festival at Penn’s Landing this Saturday. It will have artists from all over the world doing everything from salsa to Bollywood to R&B. Artists include Estelle, Anthony David, Brenda K. Starr, and Melanie Fiona.

An overlapping, second festival is the Philly Orchard Project’s annual fundraiser in the more aesthetically pleasing Liberty Lands Park in Northern Liberties. As usual, there will be local bands, gourmet food trucks (including the vaunted Honest Tom’s), and several open taps of Philly Brewing Company quaffables. Your good times will help support planting and maintenance of fruit-bearing trees around Philadelphia, which beautifies our neighborhoods, shades our streets, improves our air, and feeds us, all at once.

Also recommended:

Local powerhouses Fantasy Square Garden, who play North Star on Saturday night. For my money, they’re one of the best bands in a very good local rock scene. Catch them in the intimate confines of the North Star before they outgrow it!

Music/Poetry/Art extravaganza A Mid-Summer Meltdown, at the totally unique Bookspace bookstore/warehouse/arts venue. The event promises to be as epic and sprawling as the venue!

And if you need some place to just have a beer in the summer sun, check out Uwishunu’s Philly beergarden best-of. Enjoy the weekend!
