Ice Cream Sundaes and The Spanish-American War

Banana Wars Ice Cream Float

I went to the Franklin Fountain website today because I was hoping that they would still have the strawberry and chocolate beer floats they introduced for Philly Beer Week, using Triumph and Victory brews. (It’s presumably a coincidence that both breweries’ names are #winning!) The website didn’t answer my question, but did announce the historically delicious “Banana Wars Ice Cream Float,” proceeds from which go to preservation of the U.S.S. Olympia at the Independence Seaport Museum. Sounds delicious and worthy to me. Special nerd kudos to Franklin Fountain for pointing out the provenance of the term “banana republic” (O. Henry’s short story collection Cabbages and Kings (1904)).
