Hiring Trends from Those Seeking Jobs

In speaking recently with friends who are still in transition and looking for jobs, it’s clear that while there has not been full economic recovery in the Philadelphia legal market.  In fact, the word from the trenches is that there are a few trends:

  1. People are getting some interviews, here and there; but
  2. The job opportunities have tended to be specialized fields (ERISA work, insurance coverage, eDiscovery, etc.) rather than general commercial litigation.

So, the moral of the story is that having some experience or knowledge of a specialty rather than just general litigation is quite valuable in this current hiring climate.

    When the market is dry, applicants need to be flexible concerning salary demands. You can always move onto the next job later. But you want to stop the financial bleeding from all those students loans/credit cards. Even though each law school has an average first year salary, those numbers may not be realistic during a recession.
