The Anti-Valentine

February 14, 2008

I saw this bit of odd news this morning – a radio station’s Valentine’s Day contest for a free “relatively uncomplicated divorce” – and thought of the family lawyers out there.  Can anyone explain how a “relatively uncomplicated divorce” works?!

My guess is one party must be dead or they are both broke and homeless.

I imagine it means the divorce is uncontested, and the parties aren’t fighting over kids or property or anything else?

Broke and homeless is my vote…nothing to fight over. You know why a divorce is soo expensive? Because its soo worth it. 😉

I know of a divorce petition that was constructed, filed & agreed to by borrowing settlement language from decrees filed by other third party acquaintances (friends). Essentially – language and concepts re: land & property were used to file the paperwork. The divorced man agreed to the terms without involving a lawyer (due to costs) and the parties obtained their divorce for under $500 – all said and done. Relatively uncomplicated.
