The Happy Times of a Giants Fan
All in all, it’s been a pretty good week for me. It’s a time when being originally from the New York area has actually paid off. My New York Giants are playing in the Super Bowl. The Mets are about to acquire the best pitcher in baseball. Locally, the annual Wing Bowl extravaganza is Friday. Heck, my team won at Quizzo the other night. So, at least for me, it’s been the complete opposite of how depressed I was after the Mets blew the division lead to the Phillies in October.
Of course, for every happy, semi-gloating New York sports fan in Philly, there are many, many more Philadelphia sports fans whose mood varies anywhere from dejected, resigned, stupefied, angry to vengeful. A good number can’t bring themselves to accept that the Giants are in the Super Bowl. Many don’t know who to root for: a hated rival or a team led by a hated coach that wins too often.
So the sense of elation is somewhat tempered, as many of my friends can’t share it with me. Such is life. But if nothing else, for this short period of time, sports and contests have helped make what would be a typical dreary winter season – a time when the walks to and from work are cold – much more enjoyable, at least for me. And, of course, a happy lawyer is in a good mood and, in some ways, more effective at work.
