USA 2020’s chief export: Brand USA

May 16, 2007

I just read an online newspaper article about a newspaper that was outsourcing its local news reporting to India. It made me wonder whether we may need to embrace the phenomenon of outsourcing rather than fighting it. The US currently outsources labor intensive work to China and work requiring technical skills to India.  If this trend continues, I wonder what the role of the United States will be in 20 years?

In light of the profits made by global corporations, due to outsourcing, it is unlikely that either asking a corporation to bring back those jobs , or telling them to do so would cause CEOs to change their minds. Hence, maybe we should should embrace this change. Maybe the future of the US isnt in manufacturing but in managing.

The United States excels in regulating. Our FDA is widely considered to be the best in the world, and most inventors around the world want USPTO patent protection. So, I believe that in 20 years we will become a nation of inventors and organizers.  I believe that we will become a repository of information and a management portal for the world. Implementation of an idea will be left to another country. Our motto: You can do it, we can tell you how to do it right.

The potential of being a country of managers makes me; if a country like China or India could produce a product, why wouldnt they sell their products directly? Why wouldnt a company from China believe that it could sell the shoes cheaper and more profitably than a US company? My answer: Its the credibility of being a US based company.

The US has the advantage of being a country where many brands were created. We are the country that came up with MTV, Nike and Google. By virtue of having a consistent track record, as inventors and implementors, the US is trusted worldwide as a source of quality merchandise. US based companies have credibility that has not yet been established by other countries. In 20 years we will probably concieve the next google but send it to India to be coded. and invent a better satellite, but send it to China to be made. However, in the end, we will import the final product back into the US and then sell it worldwide under a US company brand. What we will offer is Brand USA.

Thank you for the response. I agree with you. I had previously contemplated the ideas being proposed by Daniel in the article. My blog addresses the role of the US in that forthcoming era. So, while it may seem, overall, that it is a lose lose situation, Americans have known how to make lemonade out of lemons. Brand USA is the Lemonade.
