Who Are YOU People?

April 30, 2007

I’m a big fan of hobbies.  I advocate for my friends to find hobbies all the time – when they are bored or lonely, move to a new city, break up with a boyfriend, etc.  As long as you love it, it doesn’t matter how strange the hobby seems to other people.

My hobbies include following professional cycling, making greeting cards and reading books about things and people.  I don’t think I’m too over the top when it comes to my hobbies.  I mostly engage in them alone and try not to talk about them too much.  I guess I am quietly passionate about my hobbies.

In Who Are You People? Shari Caldron investigates why some people are so passionate about their hobbies that it seems like a weird obsession to others – Barbie collectors, ice fishers, Star Wars fans. The book identifies misconceptions about the fanatically passionate and makes the reader appreciate their quirkiness.  (I have to admit that I’ve never understood why people chant the Eagles chant no matter where they are at)

I’d like to understand more about why people are fanatically passionate about their hobbies, so I ask: who are YOU people?  What are you passionate about?  Do you feel your passions are misunderstood? Do you not understand the passions of others?  If you want to find out if you are fanatically passionate about your hobby, you can take this quiz
